A Sequence of Qubit-Qudit Pauli Groups as a Nested Structure of Doilies

چکیده
Following the spirit of a recent work of one of the authors (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44 (2011) 045301), the essential structure of the generalized Pauli group of a qubit-qudit, where d = 2 and an integer k ≥ 2, is recast in the language of a finite geometry. A point of such geometry is represented by the maximum set of mutually commuting elements of the group and two distinct points are regarded as collinear if the corresponding sets have exactly 2 − 1 elements in common. The geometry comprises 2 − 1 copies of the generalized quadrangle of order two (“the doily”) that form 2−1 pencils arranged into a remarkable nested configuration. This nested structure reflects the fact that maximum sets of mutually commuting elements are of two different kinds (ordinary and exceptional) and exhibits an intriguing alternating pattern: the subgeometry of the exceptional points of the (k+2)-case is found to be isomorphic to the full geometry of the k-case. It should be stressed, however, that these generic properties of the qubit-qudit geometry were inferred from purely computer-handled cases of k = 2, 3, 4 and 5 only and, therefore, their rigorous, computer-free proof for k ≥ 6 still remains a mathematical challenge. Pauli graphs when the Hilbert space dimension contains a square: why the Dedekind psi function?
We study the commutation relations within the Pauli groups built on all decompositions of a given Hilbert space dimension q, containing a square, into its factors. Illustrative low dimensional examples are the quartit (q = 4) and two-qubit (q = 2) systems, the octit (q = 8), qubit/quartit (q = 2× 4) and three-qubit (q = 2) systems, and so on. In the single qudit case, e.g. q = 4, 8, 12, . . ., ...
متن کاملProjective Ring Line of an Arbitrary Single Qudit
As a continuation of our previous work (arXiv:0708.4333) an algebraic geometrical study of a single d-dimensional qudit is made, with d being any positive integer. The study is based on an intricate relation between the symplectic module of the generalized Pauli group of the qudit and the fine structure of the projective line over the (modular) ring Zd. Explicit formulae are given for both the ...
متن کاملTwelve-dimensional Pauli group contextuality
The goal of the paper is to check whether the real eigenstates of the observables in the single qudit Pauli group may lead to quantum contextuality, the property that mutually compatible and independent experiments depend on each other. We find that quantum contextuality crops up at dimension twelve in various configurations with a few rays. We use the Shannon capacity for characterizing the co...
متن کاملQuantum Contextuality with Stabilizer States
The Pauli groups are ubiquitous in quantum information theory because of their usefulness in describing quantum states and operations and their readily understood symmetry properties. In addition, the most well-understood quantum error correcting codes—stabilizer codes—are built using Pauli operators. The eigenstates of these operators—stabilizer states—display a structure (e.g., mutual orthogo...
متن کاملValence bond solid formalism for d-level one-way quantum computation
The d-level or qudit one-way quantum computer (d1WQC) is described using the valence bond solid formalism and the generalised Pauli group. This formalism provides a transparent means of deriving measurement patterns for the implementation of quantum gates in the computational model. We introduce a new universal set of qudit gates and use it to give a constructive proof of the universality of d1...
